Alabaster is a stone worthy of carving by artists to depict people, animals, and symbols that will last. Some artists combine alabaster with wood (mostly cedar) and colorful stones such as turquoise. Alabaster carvings are substantial pieces of artwork no matter what their size. Only marble and granite are harder stones that are carved. The coloring of the stone is natural and the textures created by carving give a variety of smooth to rough finishes to the stone. Most of the carvings in alabaster sold by Blair's Trading Post were made by Navajo artists.
